What is an IQ percentile?
A percentile rank answers a comparative question: how did this score relate to the scores of people in the test’s norm group? A result at the 70th percentile means the score was as high as or higher than approximately 70 percent of that group. It does not mean that 70 percent of the items were answered correctly.
Percentiles depend on the population used to standardise the test. A professionally normed adult test normally compares an adult with people in a similar age range. A children’s test uses age-specific norms because expected performance changes during development.
Why is the average IQ set to 100?
Modern IQ scores are usually deviation scores. Raw performance is transformed so that the centre of the norm group is 100 and the spread is described by a standard deviation, commonly 15. The number 100 is therefore a reference point rather than a natural unit of intelligence.

Day-to-day factors such as sleep, anxiety, distraction, motivation and familiarity with the task format can also influence performance. Can the same IQ score represent a different percentile on another test?
Yes. Not every test uses exactly the same standard deviation, age norms or scoring method. A score should therefore be interpreted using the conversion table supplied for that specific instrument. Comparing numbers from unrelated online quizzes can be misleading even when both are labelled “IQ”.
