What is a personality type?

A personality type is a category intended to summarise a recurring pattern. A questionnaire may classify someone as introverted rather than extraverted, or assign a multi-letter profile based on several preference dimensions. The appeal is immediate: categories are easy to remember, compare and discuss.

The limitation is that categories can hide variation. Two people assigned the same type may differ substantially, while two people placed on opposite sides of a cutoff may have nearly identical scores.

What is a personality trait?

Good reports reduce this problem by showing strength or balance on each dimension rather than displaying only the final label. A near-middle score should be described as flexible or balanced, not treated as a weak version of a type.

Type language can be useful as a starting hypothesis. Ask whether the description captures situations you recognise, where it fails, and which preferences change with context. Focus on patterns that support practical decisions rather than collecting labels.
